The Youth Institute for Leadership & Global Awareness prepares the
next generation for global leadership by increasing their understanding
of complex global issues through intense case study and application.
The Youth Institute for Leadership & Global Awareness provides
high school students with the opportunity to live and learn with students
from across the United States and other countries. Located at American
University, in the nation's capital, the Youth Institute invites high-achieving
students to develop the skills of cross-cultural understanding and
activism necessary to be successful in today's global community.
2006
Rwanda Project
• Explore the factors that contribute to intolerance and manifest
as genocide through a case study of Rwanda
• Conduct a peace negotiation simulation based on the Rwanda
case study, learning invaluable conflict resolution skills
•Participate in field trips to international Non-governmental
organizations and embassies
• Develop personal social activism plans with the guidance of
social entrepreneurs
• Watch and analyze movies that relate to the course
• Live with students from around the world and build lasting
relationships
